GWG Members visit Step Back in Eatonton

Step Back Gets Visit from GWG Members

Saturday, Dec 13 was a beautiful day in Georgia and some of our GWG writer's group used the opportunity to visit the 1890's replica of a rural Georgia community. Among the GWG and GAA folks who visited Step Back were "Boots" Coffed & her husband Dale, Pete Muzyka, Lisa Wheeler with GAA president Mev Rozsman, Kathy & Leyroy Wright, and Bill & Miranda Boghner.

Seeing the way owner Roger Pierce's Step Back recreation: "CREATED IN PUTNAM COUNTY, GEORGIAN MEMORY OF ALL THE COMMUNITIES PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE BUILT IN OUR GREAT AMERICAN NATION!", was a real eye opener to the way rural folks lived, worked, and worshipped over 120 years ago. This trip down memory lane will provide some interesting writings by some of the GWG folks before too long.

Here are some photos taken by Leroy and Pete with the help of others:

GWG Celebrates a Writer's Christmas Gathering

The Greensboro Writers Guild of Georgia celebrates the Christmas Holiday at published author Bob Scully's lakehouse

Another successful year is in the book for GWG . Our group officially closed out 2014 with our annual Christmas gathering which was held at the beautiful lake home of Bob and Jennifer Scully. The mood was festive, our host gracious, and the food delicious!

This year was filled with a few hello’s to people we met for the first time and one farewell to long-time member and dear friend, Gay Williford, who moved to Colorado. I will list a few of this year’s highlights:
GWG Highlights of 2014
1. March 4, 2014, special guest: Rachael Ward (Managing Editor of Lake Oconee News) visited GWG and gathered material for a feature article about the Greensboro Writers’ Guild.

2. May 6, 2014, a potluck luncheon/farewell party was held in honor of Gay Williford, who has moved to Colorado. A chapbook “Gay’s Greatest Hits” was presented to Gay. Twenty-six members of GWG contributed one of their favorite poems (written by Gay) and made brief comments about the poem they chose. Liz Howells compiled, edited, and printed the chapbook.

3. May 20, 2014, special guest: Michelle Castleberry wowed those in attendance of the Tuesday 5/20/14 meeting. A big voice from a little lady, a charming poet and first-time author of “Dissecting the Angel.”

4. October 14, 2014, Visit/Luncheon/Tour/ and Meeting at the temporary location of the Georgia Writers’ Museum, Eatonton.

5. November 5, 2014, our annual reading program was held at Reynolds Landing in Greensboro. Thanks to every participating author and our talented co-leader, Barb Griffiths, who compiled and produced the booklet “From the Inkwell.” Also, thanks to the keen editing assistance of fellow member, Linda Wagner.

Back to the event of the day. Fellow writer, Pete Muzyka, presented members with e-Book disks of the newly revised, larger version of the book “Abandoned Rural America” book. The latest version book is currently at the printers and Pete hopes to have the new copies prior to Christmas.

On another exciting note, Pete is looking into setting up a blog for GWG. If all goes well, we will be able to post pictures and commentary about our activities and events on the blog.

Finally, to wrap things up, today’s event was an especially memorable one for me as I accidentally locked myself in the bathroom. If you weren’t there, you missed out on some pretty humorous and anxious moments. I want to personally thank Jackie Askew, who finally heard my pounding on the door and my cries for “HELP” over the noise of partiers.

“I think someone may be locked in the bathroom,” someone said.

“I’ll lay you ten to one it’s my wife in there,” my husband Leroy answered.

Well, yeah! It was me. I don’t know how many men were working on my freedom, but it sounded like an army on the other side of the door. In the end I believe Bill pried the facing away enough for Leroy to pry the door open and pop the lock. Oh my! The word “freedom” has a whole new meaning.

Wishing my wonderful fellow co-leaders (Barb Griffiths and Bill Boughner) and every member of GWG a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Our next meeting will be January 6, 2015.

Today’s Readings:
1. George Heiring ~ “Home Coming” from his book: The Seasonal Heart

2. Boots Coffed ~ “Condiment Man,” written by Gay Williford, Inspired by Dale Coffed; also a piece entitled “Christmas,” written by Boots Coffed

Scenes From the Party

Also, a big "Thank You" to Bob and Jennifer Scully for offering "White Oaks" as the venue for our 12/09/14 Christmas Party.  The setting and provisions you made for our enjoyment and comfort were above and beyond.  Thanks also for the door prizes which added to the days fun ... four of which were donated by GWG and six were provided by the Scully's.

A big "Thank You" also to our capable GWG shopper, Linda Wagner, for another job well done.

More and more I realize what a pleasure it is to belong to GWG.  Knowing and interacting with each person is a rewarding experience.  For me, the learning and enjoyment only deepens, year after year.  I am convinced there is no other writing group like GWG!
